The People’s Planning School empowers residents by teaching the basics of city planning, within the context of the San Pedro community and the Rancho San Pedro redevelopment planning process.
Courses are taught by experts from within the team in the field of housing, equitable development, sustainability and transportation, providing local residents with increased knowledge about how cities form and evolve as well as the political and policy forces that effect those changes.
Material for the People’s Planning School was provided in Spanish and English, presented in accessible terms for residents. Each session included presenting general subject matter on each of the topics, applied to the Rancho San Pedro context, with opportunities for students to apply their learning in group discussions and activities. The class culminated in a “final exam” where students provided critical input of the original plan from the developer selection process, and a graduation and celebration at the local office grand opening.
